Last Sunday we went out in celebration of birthdays at our favorite special birthday celebrating place, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse. The food was excellent as always and the wine list was pretty spectacular. We dialed it back a little bit from last year’s extravagant two bottle dinner because a bottle of bubbly and a bottle of red is kind of a lot for two people to power through in the span of one dinner, especially on a Sunday night with the workweek looming.

Don’t fret though we still sampled a glass of the Roederer Estate Brut NV that was really delightful. It is nice to have a nice glass of sparkling wine every now and again to sort of calibrate your palate. Don’t get me wrong, we truly enjoy hunting out the diamond in the rough bargain wines, but it is nice to not have to work for it some nights too.

The wine to accompany dinner was a struggle, I’ve been enjoying a lot of red blends lately so I was intrigued by a few of them on the list but ultimately we went with a zinfandel we hadn’t had previously. The Novy Family Winery Zinfandel from 2012 got the nod. I think it went well with dinner. It was well balanced and a fun pick.
